Start with the things you cannot compromise on: access to a particular kind of healthcare, school, work schedule, climate or transport. Then compare neighborhoods within a city. An appealing skyline does not tell you what your Tuesday morning will be like.
The city guides below are starting points for a visit, not safety ratings or rent surveys. Check current travel advice for both your destination and the route you will take.
Mountain cities or the Caribbean coast?
Medellín offers an urban valley setting and a rail-based transport system. Bogotá offers the institutions and cultural choices of the capital, with a cooler highland setting and a commute that deserves careful testing. Cali brings a different cultural rhythm, including a prominent salsa scene.
On the Caribbean side, Cartagena combines a historic center with modern coastal neighborhoods. Santa Marta is a base for exploring the surrounding coast and mountains, subject to current access conditions. Barranquilla is a river-port city with a major Carnival tradition. A beach holiday and a year-round household budget are different propositions.

City photographs help you orient yourself. Inspect the actual address, route and services before making a housing decision.
Compare the same ordinary day
- How long is the actual journey from the apartment to work, school or the clinic?
- Is there a grocery shop you would use within a practical distance?
- Can you sleep comfortably with the noise, temperature and ventilation?
- Does the building have reliable internet at the times you need it?
- How will you return home after dark, and what does that cost?
Record observations and quotes for each neighborhood. Do not compare one city's luxury furnished apartment with another city's unfurnished long lease.
Make the shortlist smaller
Choose two plausible cities, not six rushed stops. Spend enough ordinary time in each to test the assumptions that matter to you. If possible, revisit in weather different from your first stay before making a long commitment.
