Cartagena's historic streets and Caribbean setting are compelling reasons to visit. Living there also means testing heat, cooling costs, noise and the difference between tourist accommodation and a longer-term home.
Do not assume a room enjoyed on holiday provides a realistic monthly housing benchmark. Compare written quotes for the same contract length and ask exactly which utilities and building charges are included.
Compare different kinds of neighborhood
The walled center and Getsemaní put historic streets and visitor activity close by. Bocagrande and other coastal districts offer a different built environment. Within each, proximity to nightlife, traffic, shops and the waterfront changes the experience.
Walk the immediate area when conditions are suitable, inspect the apartment and plan transport for the hours you will return home. A sea view does not establish convenient grocery shopping, medical access or quiet sleep.

City photographs help you orient yourself. Inspect the actual address, route and services before making a housing decision.
Inspect for the climate
Test air conditioning and ventilation. Ask to see recent electricity bills and find out who maintains the equipment. Inspect for moisture, corrosion and water problems, especially in a building exposed to coastal conditions.
If you work remotely, take a call from the room you would use and ask what happens during an interruption to power or internet. Have a backup plan that does not depend on a café always having space.
Make one visit about the city itself
Spend time in the historic center and Getsemaní without trying to turn every stop into a housing decision. Notice how public squares, visitor activity and residential uses share space. Ask before photographing residents or performers, and agree any fee rather than assuming a portrait is part of the street scenery.
Spend a day on practical errands
- Price your usual groceries outside the assumption of eating every meal in visitor restaurants.
- Time the journey to a suitable clinic and confirm insurance acceptance.
- Compare the total housing bill, including administration and electricity.
- Ask about seasonal events, nearby construction and building rules.
Use current official visitor information for cultural sites and excursions. For boat trips, verify the operator, conditions and safety arrangements; a beach photograph is not a weather or access report.
